accessing file system using Live CD

I suspect that one of the HDD in my LVM has failed(or is failing) and I can't complete boot.
So I have booted from a Fedora 14 Live disc and can see the failed (or failing) HDD but when I try to access the content of this, or any, drive I get a "you don't have permission to access" message.

How can I boot to an optical drive and have all the permissions I would have had I been able to boot the HDD?

If you are having permissions issues, try as root. Generally, that will work. Something like this -

su -
mkdir /mnt/hdd_part1
mount -t ext4 /dev/sdax /mnt/hdd_part1
