menus - file, edit, etc. partially blanked

I have f17 installed from tc1 with current updates on a 32 bit intel p4 system

I am noticing problems with the menu line only showing part of the line. For
example only file shows with the rest of the line blank. In some cases
audacity for instance, I can open a new window and everything is fine.
I have also noticed in both f16 and now f17 that a weather forecasting
program I use zygrib, all the buttons are blank.

Finally I tried to install f17 on my laptop (no optical drive) from usb and
haven't made any progress. The laptop is a hp dm1z and I have tried
the live-cd command line tool and unetbootin. The install fails with
a kernel panic. Oh and I am trying to install from the f 17 beta x86_64 iso.

Do you have an older Nvidia card? (like the Geforce 6000, 7000, or FX 5000 series? There are some known issues in using the nouveau driver with those cards. Not certain if using the Nvidia driver would fix it or not.
