akmod-nvidia fails me on 3.3.0-4fc16.x86_64
All previous kernels have worked just fine with Leigh's guide and the akmod-nvidias, however with the new kernel, it just hangs and 'startx' reveals:

Most strange since the right kernel-headers, kernel-devel, kernel, kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia are present. And, after 24 hours, looks like I'm the only one with this glitch! The previous kernels continue to load properly, thank goodness.
Anyone got a clue?

And Greg, no. It's akmod-nvidia-290.10-2.fc16.2.x86_64
Edit: Just tried 'yum clean all' and then 'yum update' and still no newer version of akmod-nvidia available. Where's that one from? RPMFusion non-free shows just what I've got.

Re: akmod-nvidia fails me on 3.3.0-4fc16.x86_64
You're not the only one with this problem. I've been dealing with this same "failed to load the nvidia kernel module" for the past week or so with the last 2 kernel updates. I did everything you did - "yum clean all", "yum update", and more to no avail - in fact, I think it screwed me up even more with the ONE kernel I did have working. I was the unfortunate SOB that didn't have any kernel that loaded properly. I freaking FINALLY got it fixed today: I removed akmod-nvidia, reinstalled the current kernel, and erased xorg-x11-drv-nouveau per leigh's instructions for F15 if it "refuses to die" (and it did!), reinstalled the nvidia akmod per leigh's instructions, and voila....back to square. I think the akmod FINALLY sets a correct kmod for the latest kernel. From now on, I may just wait a week or two before updating the kernel so that I'm reasonably sure that the akmod will give me the right module. This has been a royal PITA for me this week; I hope you fare better...

Re: akmod-nvidia fails me on 3.3.0-4fc16.x86_64
Thanks, and sorry for your pain.
BTW, here's /var/log/messages:
Quote:
Mar 24 21:49:18 localhost akmods[956]: Checking kmods exist for 3.2.10-3.fc16.x86_64[ OK ]
Mar 24 21:49:18 localhost systemd[1]: PID file /var/run/akmodsd.pid not readable (yet?) after start.
Mar 24 21:49:18 localhost systemd[1]: Unit akmods.service entered failed state.
|
And no joy on 'service akmod restart' or 'systemctl restart akmods.service'

Yes, no joy on simply dumping/reinstalling the akmod. Didn't try dumping the kernel and all you went though. While this is a bit of a bug in the butt, it's only the one kernel. I'd have to be down two before going to that extreme.

Re: akmod-nvidia fails me on 3.3.0-4fc16.x86_64
could always remove that kernel and use a previous kernel till there is a akmod-nvidia update to the 295.33 then reinstall the 3.3.0 kernel

*sigh* Nope, that's not the cure for me. Thanks for the suggestion though. Hmmm...it's getting late and I'm getting brain-fuzzies; I'll think more in the morning.

Yes, you're right - I know I'm getting old when I say it's getting late...and, you're definitely right: it's getting late.
So....for the morning:
you did this, right:
Code:
su
yum remove akmod-nvidia
And then did this:
Code:
su
yum erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau
mv /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nouveau.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nouveau.txt
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)
And then did this:
Code:
su -
sed -i '/root=/s|$| rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0|' /boot/grub/grub.conf
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)
And then followed leigh123linux's instructions to the letter for F16?
This is what I did, and it fixed me.
