I'm amazed that anyone was able to be productive in GNOME 2; Linus Torvalds famously called GNOME 2 a "disease" for taking away so much of the configurability that GNOME 1 had. GNOME 3 is just the logical continuation of that disease. Linus ended up switching to KDE 3 because of GNOME 2, then switched to XFCE because of KDE 4. He's still using Fedora, by the way.

Well, Fedora has a rather nice DE selection drop down on the login screen. Just install all the different Desktop Environments you want to try out, log out, and log in again. It is as simple as that. Honestly, I don't know why people keep moaning about Gnome. Pick your poison and move on. Life is short.
