Re: It's Time For Another Episode of NAME THAT FEDORA RELEASE (Robyn Bergeron)

Voting for the Fedora 18 release names has begun. You can find the
potential names in the voting application:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/voting/

If you are a Fedora contributor (defined as having signed the FPCA and being
in one other Fedora group in the account system) then you are eligilbe to
vote.
Well, here's the potential names:

Chamoy
Frankfurter
Halva
Ketchy Ketchup
Pamukkale
Pop Soda
Spherical Cow
Tandoori Chicken

There's also a vote on keeping the naming going. Take a careful look at these and realize that if we keep the naming, one of them is going to identify F18. 'Fedora 18: Spherical Cow'.....

I'm really sorry, but those are all awful names, just when I thought it couldn't get worse than Beefy Miracle. I was recently looking back at Fedora's list of previous names and I thought that they were all pretty cool for the most part. However, I find that the naming has taken a drop into a downward spiral as of F17.

I'd opt for that! It holds a certain sense of professionalism within its clean and simple look all while displaying all the information one needs to know.

f*x Names, i say we finish calling the releases Names. at the end of the day hardly anybody calls the Release by Name.

Pop Soda is alright but the rest are plain rediculous names

I endorse the name "Tetrodotoxin". The link is manifest: Beefy Miracle works miraculous ways in your body after ingestion, so is Tetrodotoxin. By the way, Tetrodotoxin does reflect the beneficial effect of Fedora's "there's-nothing-we-can't-or-won't-break" ability on countless Linux users.

Re: It's Time For Another Episode of NAME THAT FEDORA RELEASE (Robyn Bergeron)

IMHO it's good to have a release name instead of just a number not only for marketing reasons. And there were many good proposals on http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Name_s...ggestion_Table

But I'm not happy about the choice made by the Fedora Board ... I mean there were many proposed names not related to food and not that silly.

Cheers,
Roman

Re: It's Time For Another Episode of NAME THAT FEDORA RELEASE (Robyn Bergeron)

Well, my thoughts about the naming problem is this... (and no, I am not going into the reasons for the issue. This isn't the place for that)

The F17 name caused an issue.
The naming of Fedora releases is not a problem, the name for F17 is.

So, remove the offending item, the F17 name. As it stands, they are talking about removing the name from future releases, but leaving the offending item in place.

It's like chopping down an apple tree that has grown hundreds of good apples just because it grew one bad apple. Throw out the bad apple and leave the tree to produce more good apples.

Sure, I think some of the names are crazy, and I have been really poking fun at the F17 name myself, but overall the naming is relatively good fun for a lot of people.

Re: It's Time For Another Episode of NAME THAT FEDORA RELEASE (Robyn Bergeron)

Good, bad or indifferent, the reality is that almost nobody refers to Fedora's names. In the 8 years that I've been on the Forum and involved with Fedora, it's always been the version number that's mentioned in the posts. Hmmm...maybe I can illustrate:

Nope, that's not good. Did a search for "verne" and pulled loads of references, mostly in parentheses or referenced, but Verne none-the-less. Ah well, I had a point there...guess it's just on the top of my head.

Re: It's Time For Another Episode of NAME THAT FEDORA RELEASE (Robyn Bergeron)

No, you're right. If you're going to be completely literal, then people might mention Verne, or Spartacus--errm, Leonidas, but almost always, in my memory, in conjunction with F11, F12, and so on. I think that in the strictly legal sense, where someone says just answer yes or no, you'd say, yes Verne was frequently used. However, almost always as elaboration.

Meh, if the names give people some fun, leave 'em in.

Re: It's Time For Another Episode of NAME THAT FEDORA RELEASE (Robyn Bergeron)

That's the way I feel as well. I don't care one way or the other about having a named release, but some people enjoy it, so leave the naming in place.

I was looking over on the mailing list about the debate going on as far as ending the naming, but they still haven't addressed the REAL problem (as I stated above)

The F17 name caused some problems, so they talk about removing the name from future releases, yet nothing was said about the actual offender.
