Bad Display on new install

I am a LInux newbie and I've got a problem with my graphics display. Running Fedora 16, video card HD Radeon 6480G, HP Laptop, in dualboot with Win 7. When I first loaded the live CD, I had to do it in basic video mode. All looked great, except that Gnome 3 didn't load. I installed. Again, all went fine. After the first boot, the display looks ugly. Again Gnome 3 failed to load. In System settings, display, it shows a big pink rectangle saying 'unknown'. Only one resolution is listed. Will I be able to use Fedora at all or forget about it? In Windows 7 I could have reinstalled the driver. I do not know how to do it in Fedora 16. Besides, from trying out other distros, I discovered that Linux doesn't have as many drivers available as Windows. So I am stomped. Thanks in advance for your help.
