Fedora 16 fails to install; Core 5 installs without problems
Hi everybody,
About 6 years ago I got myself a Fedora core 5 system. After some time other things became more important.
Now I am back to get it working again, so I downloaded and installed the latest live version 16. Unfortunately it failed to install and I suspect it's the problem with the bios and gpt. I tried many things like passing nogpt to the kernel, before installing and formatting the drive with a windows installation cd. But in vain.
I went back to Fedora core 5 and now that is up and running, so there is no hardware defect.
I tried to use the package updater, but that failed. Which is part of "no longer supported", I suppose. What can I do?
Thanks in advance.
B.

There's a problem! You really need 768MB of Ram, minimum.
Quote:
- Minimum RAM for text-mode: 768 MiB
- Minimum RAM for graphical: 768 MiB
- Recommended RAM for graphical: 1152 MiB

Sorry. That's old information. Ik have to update that. There is 1 Gb installed.
I also had to replace the processor with a Duron. What was that command again to retrieve the hardware info from the system.

Re: Fedora 16 fails to install; Core 5 installs without problems
Used to be hwbrowser, I believe. So, if that's not the issue, where's the installation fail coming in? Does it seem to install and then just not boot or are there any other clues?

Re: Fedora 16 fails to install; Core 5 installs without problems
Again I tried to install Fedora 16, relying on the partition table and file system that was created during the Fedora 5 installation and now I made.
Below is a part of the hardware configuration, made through lspci.
After updating the system with all available packages and shutting down the computer I had trouble to connect to the internet the next day. In the network configuration "cable unplugged" was shown. In lspci there was no nic shown.
Using another nic did not solve the disconnection from the internet problem, so the hardware was not defect. Bios reset to factory settings: no result. Removing the soundblaster soundcard: nothing changed. Then I put the nic in the slot of the soundcard and the soundcard where the nic was in: bingo.
I can listen to an audio cd, but not from all 5 speakers, except when I configure the sound device in system settings and only the first time I click a music track. Should I address that problem to another thread?

Re: Fedora 16 fails to install; Core 5 installs without problems
If you have installed F16 correctly and now just have a sound problem then yes, I'd start another thread on that problem.
