Deleting files does not free-up any disk space!

A bit of a problem after I filed up my / root. I have deleted some of the very large files which caused the problem but that doesn't seem to acvtually release any free space! I emptied the graphical Trash bin bur still the space does not seem to be free. What do I need to do to actually release the space occupied by these deleted files?

Thanks,

Hello
a bit more info required, are you using a live cd/usb ? you cannot make that any smaller no matter what you delete.

Post,
Code:
df -h / /home
If / and /home are separate partitions, then anything you are deleting from /home, including emptying your TRASH, won't effect the disk usage of / (root partition). Only if /home is actually part of /, and not just mounted on /, will deleting files in /home affect disk usage in /.

In a number of cases, /var/log tends to get filled up. There is a periodic cleaning done, but it may need tweaking to reduce the number of log files retained.

Re: Deleting files does not free-up any disk space!

Thanks for all your replies, solved now. The answer in the end was some very large files (virtual machine images) in the Trash folder which unfortunately were not showing in GUI waste bin. This was was showing as empty when clearly it wasn't. Maybe a bug caused by having some particularly large deleted files.

Cheers,

I think it's usually in ~/.local/share/Trash
