SPF...what is it? more than a TXT rr?

Evening All, I have a little problem with understanding SPF validation process.

...it seems the forward zone file, TXT record, is important and should be included

...does an MTA need to answer queries or acknowledgements?

...what does an MTA require to support SPF, just authen. users?

I am just not familiar with MTAs and additional material from www.openspf.org/Introduction is suggesting I dunno what.
