Try the following
Code:
vim /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
/gedit.desktop
On my computer, this is what I see when I search for
gedit.desktop
Quote:
|
text/plain=fedora-nedit.desktop;emacs.desktop;kde4-kate.desktop;emacsclient.desktop;gedit.desktop;fed ora-gvim.desktop;

If I search for nautilus.desktop (under GNOME)
Quote:
x-content/blank-bd=brasero-nautilus.desktop;
x-content/blank-cd=brasero-nautilus.desktop;
x-content/blank-dvd=brasero-nautilus.desktop;
x-content/blank-hddvd=brasero-nautilus.desktop;
application/x-gnome-saved-search=nautilus.desktop;
inode/directory=nautilus.desktop;

See if this helps.

P.S.
There could be a easier way out of this. But, I have changed file type associations in the past this way (I like editing configuration files ... )
