Accessing apache server remotely from another machine (newbie).
Hi, I just installed everything (Apache, PHP, MySQL), I got my apache server to work, and I can go to http://localhost and see the PHP screen with all the variables.
So its working.
Now, to connect to this remotely from another computer, don't I just have to open a browser and type the IP address of my Apache server machine?
Is there more to it?
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Brent.

Re: Accessing apache server remotely from another machine (newbie).
http://<address of host machine> should get you the same PHP screen provided port 80 is open.
This is connecting over the local network, not the Internet.

Hi Glenn, thanks for your response.
That's probably why its not working.
Because I'm trying to connect to it via wifi over the Internet.
*Is* there a way you can get that to work, via over the Internet?
Or is the only way to get that to work is via DNS?

Have you open the port 80/tcp in the firewall?

Hi Jake, the "Listen 80" command is in the httpd.conf file, is that what you mean?

No, try to run in a terminal "system-config-firewall", type your root password and then check where is write "WWW(HTTP)"

Hi Jake, that listing WWW(HTTP) says "80/tcp"

Yes, put the check in the small white box in the left

Jake, it still doesn't work.
Any suggestions? It is greatly appreciated.

Jake, to be more specific, I did check the checkbox to the left of it in the table, and reboot.

Re: Accessing apache server remotely from another machine (newbie).
Obviously, you have applied the changes. Please re-execute "system-config-firewall" and check if the white box on the left of "WWW(HTTP)" is checkhed

Re: Accessing apache server remotely from another machine (newbie).
Is the wireless a NAT (usually is and that blocks access)..
What are the IP numbers you have for the system? (bet it is 192.168.something, and those are not routable.)
If you are blocked for either of the above reasons (they are equivalent actually) the only way to get access is to identify the external IP number, AND forward port 80 in the router/NAT device.

Re: Accessing apache server remotely from another machine (newbie).
JPollard, when I go to whatismyipaddress.com, it says "208.54.39.234".
How do I find out whether my wireless is a NAT?

Re: Accessing apache server remotely from another machine (newbie).
All you need to do is "ifconfig -a" in a terminal window will list all active network devices.
What you get from "whatismyipaddress.com" is the external IP number most likely used by the NAT.

JPollard, I'll try that later when I get home.
Thanks so much for your help.
