Fedora PPC guide...

Just wanted to say that there is a Fedora PPC install guide, and if those of you are interested in contributing patches, et al, please do so.

What about us poor IBM Powered fellas? No Mac around here just Power3-64's...all my x86's have Fedora and I'd love to get rid of that AIX dino-OS.

you will need an installed linux, possibly an FC3 on a PC and a CDrom or DVDrom ...

Here the complete HOWTO install FC3 on the G4:

- to the primary HDD install OSX, leave free space for FC3
- get the CDs of FC3 ppc install and burn them (diesks: boot, 1,2,3,4)
- build your other drive in temporary. Unplug the built in CDrom (you dont need that if you can access your built in CDrom eject button)
- insert boot disk
- restart, hold C to boot from CD.

INSTALL FIRST TIME
- install graphical
@ disk partitioning
-- manually partition
-- create apple boot strap .. 1 MB
-- create Swap ... 1024 MB
-- create ext3 .. / .. fill all space up
(dont delete other partitions, OsX lives on them)
..
@ Custom setup
-- install minimal with system tools (like mc for example)
-- if you can, use network SMB services (or maybe text based internet)
..
..

After reboot you should have a console.
- Get the Xautoconfig rpm and install it and run it. This will create a nice and working Xorg conf file.
- save that conf file somehow. (SMB, upload, or put your HDD to the 2nd linux mashine)

REINSTALL FULL
- install graphical
@ disk partitioning
-- manually partition

-- delete all non OsX partitions (apple boot,swap,ext3) .. (if you skip that you wont have yaboot conf)
(dont delete other partitions, OsX lives on them)

-- create apple boot strap .. 1 MB
-- create Swap ... 1024 MB
-- create ext3 .. / .. fill all space up
..
@ Custom setup
-- install as you wish, with X, Gnome ... KDE, ...
..

After reboot, Mac will hang at boot.

- Take out your HDD from the Mac and build it in to your other Linux Machine.
- after boot mount the drive temporarly (take a look at hardware, then just a command like: mount /dev/hdd )

- copy the file created by Xautoconfig and replace it with the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf

- put the HDD back to the Mac.

FC3 is UP

- edit /etc/yaboot.conf
-- add: macosx=/dev/hda9 (look wich partition your OsX is, use parted)
-- add: enablecdboot

- edit /etc/yum.conf
-- add repository mirrors wich are close. ( possibly make one on LAN, mount as an SMB drive and acess it local)

- run: yum update

... voila .. there is the FC3 on the Mac

Ooops, problem.

The Mac still hangs at 2 of 5 boots at searching for new hardware, i guess its becose the soundcard still not detected properly. (and i modified /etc/modprobe.conf)

After 20 boots and 8 resets it looked like the HDD had inconsistency.
... dropped me to shell
... sad i should press "W" for rewrite partition table.
... Now whole disk is empty

Conclusion
USE SEPARATE HDD FOR LINUX

I used a PPC live CD, gentoo has one, ubuntu has one. Its MUCH easier than removing the drive (especially if you have a laptop!

anyone have problems with cpu fan on the G4. G5, or macmini throttling to ungodly speeds
at one point it sounded like my G4 PowerBook was going to take off
the cpufan over a period of 10 minutes revved up to jet engine speeds
and the laptop got so hot I thought it was going to catch on fire
and this was with FC4
also tried
FC5 in the development branch with hopes there might be some patch in the kernel

Hi guys,
as you can see I'm a new at fedoraforum. I just want to say that (as you can see in the quote) I've just installed Fedora on my iBook G4 with great success, but after big troubles. The guide posted above is one of the 4 or 5 that I've been using during the installation. They're all good how-tos, but finally I decided to create another guide more specific for Fedora+iBook, a little bit longer and detailed. Unfortunately it is only in Italianat he moment (yes, I'm from Turin - 2006 Winter Olympics city) but an English versionis coming soon.
Hope this stuff can be usefull!

I have a stock Cube with 450 PPC G4 in it and have tried all sorts of video options with no luck... Even Text mode doesn't work.

Has anyone had any luck getting FC5 to load on a Cube?

I've had FC5 on that exact same Cube BUT not with an ADC monitor. It would only work with my Sony 17" 200sf.

Ok excellent..

Anything special that you did?

I have a ADC monitor so this might be causing the problem.

Ubuntu & Kubuntu 5.10 Breezy work fine without any issues.
