Error when running Software Update or trying to install rpm package

Hello, all. I searched the forum for an answer and didn't find one, so hopefully I'm not double-posting

When I run Software Update (gui, not yum update), I receive an error that says:

"Could not get updates
Failed to process request.
More details: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)."

I get a similar error when I try to install an rpm package:

"Failed to install file
Unknown error. Please refer to the detailed bug report and report in your distribution bugtracker.
More details: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"

I don't know where the error file it mentions is. After I click OK to the error I receive when trying to install an rpm package, I get another error:

"The action could not be completed.
The request failed. More details are available in the detailed report.
More details: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"

What to do?

could be of a busy server.

try (as root) in terminal:
# yum clean all
# yum update -y

for me this works (almost) always. when not, just try some time later again.

I tried both of those. I also reinstalled PackageKit and bash, which didn't do anything.

This first started days ago. I was running Software Update and in the middle of the updating, the computer overheated and shut down. It hasn't been the same since. It's been giving me these errors for about a week.

looks like trouble server side and not on your box.

what version of Fedora do you have? Fedora 14 is end of life and does not provide any more updates.

other trouble may be caused by the wrong update addresses/servers. look in the packagekit what software sources/repositries are selected, refresh package list. I remember I had this problem once and found out that the server was down. further deep-down-tech I don't no much about it.

The GUI says that every time, though, for either software updates or installing an rpm (rather, trying to and failing). How can I do the other things you mentioned?

I have frequent update errors with F16 LXDE recently. most of the time 2nd or 3rd attempt runs normally.
have to think about this, not yet somekind of a solution...

i am a bit confused
if you did what i think you did then you might have ,somewhat, killed your install

1) first post
yum is not working
SO
2)
How did you reinstall packagekit and bash ?????
if yum is not working ???

A GUESS
3) you installed them from the install dvd manually
installing older versions on top of the newer ones from updates

if so

4) your system might never work right
until you manually install the up to date from the fedora-updates mirror

5)
Is that what you did ?

Please re-read my first post. I never said yum did not work.

Nope. Again, I never said yum didn't work. I reinstalled them both from the terminal:

yum reinstall bash -y
yum reinstall PackageKit -y
