In F16, after F6 at login window, then ...?

In F16, at the login window, if I hit F6 then I get a terminal window. How do I then

1) mount / unmount an external, USB HD? (It complains about nothing in fstab)

2) get Gnome running?

3) reboot or shutdown?

Thanks!
