    Problem running Huawei e303c 3g usb modem in fedora 12

    Hi Everybody...

    I bought a 3g usb modem (Huawei e303c) which is compatible with Linux. I am using fedora 12 (kernel 2.6.32.26-175.fc12.i686). As per the method described in their manual, I had installed the Linux driver provided with the modem.

    After installation the network manager applet shows "Wired network(Huawei Mobile) disconnected" and there is no option for connecting

    If I try using Administration->network and add a new modem connection, then the message is "No modem was found on your system"

    I tried running a executable they provided "startMobilePartner". Then the result is

    [root@krish krish]# startMobilePartner
    use /etc/datacard_config
    grep: /etc/datacard_config: No such file or directory
    grep: /etc/datacard_config: No such file or directory
    DISPLAY=:0
    XAUTHLOCALNAME=krish
    MOBILE_EXEC=
    ISRUNNING=
    [root@krish krish]#

    I am stuck at this point. Anybody running this modem successfully on fedora 12?

    Re: Problem running Huawei e303c 3g usb modem in fedora 12

    Finally I found the solution. If somebody is having this problem then follow the procedure given

    Connect the 3g dongle to usb port
    then give the command lsusb in terminal, it will give something like

    Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
    Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
    Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046d:c05a Logitech, Inc.
    Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
    Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
    Bus 001 Device 005: ID 12d1:1506 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
    Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:0111 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Card Reader
    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

    here we can see 12d1 as vendor id and 1506 as device id

    Install usb_modeswitch, usb_modeswitch_data from fedora repository

    Then install the driver provided by Huawei which will be with the dongle.

    After that you need to add a configuration to /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf:

    DefaultVendor = 0x12d1
    DefaultProduct = 0x1506
    MessageEndPoint = "0x01"
    MessageContent = "5553424300000000000000000000001106000000000000000 0000000000000"

    and save. Create a custom udev rule to override the devices initial attempts to be removable storage.

    gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/10-Huawei-Datacard.rules

    Paste the following:

    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1506", SYSFS{idVendor}=="12d1",
    RUN+="/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1506 --type option-zerocd"

    save remove dongle and reboot

    Then go to network connections and add a new mobile broadband connection. It will show a device named Huawei and then you can select a service provider. After everything go to NetworkManager Applet and enable the connection. It will work
