I Encryption of Windows Partition with LUKS

All,

I found out something tonight that kinda ticked me off...

The thing I absolutely love about open source stuff is that encryption of drives and files are great!

HOWEVER...

Whilst running F16 tonight, I successfully mounted my other W7 partition (same disk) with great ease..... I thought that part of the disk (Another OS mind you) was password protected?!?!?!?!?!?!?

How can I be *sure* that the files on that partition are protected? Word on the street is Bitlocker has had its' limitations and certain programs have devised a way to crack it..... Is there a way to encrypt the partition with LUKS and allow the OS to function properly as well? Please enlighten.....

As far as I know, you cannot encrypted the boot partition of any OS. Even with bitlocker, you cannot encrypt the C: drive because windows is installed there. So, I would imagine such a setup might not be possible ...

If I am wrong, someone please correct me! Cheers.

Well, with this mentality/convention, this would mean that you could take ANY windows distro and mount it into F16 then, right?(Obviously passwords to access the OS do not account for much?)

Kinda confused here....

Re: I Encryption of Windows Partition with LUKS

What you say is true. But, isn't that the case with all distributions on unencrypted partitions when accessed with a live CD? This is my understanding of course. I could be wrong however.

I know about the windows bit based on my experience when I tried to encrypt windows partition using bitlocker ...

Re: I Encryption of Windows Partition with LUKS

DiskCryptor is a better encryption program than bitlocker by far. It's similar to trucrypt but is actually faster and works with all windows os's. Essentially installing it in windows it can encrypt your 7 partition and require a passphrase in order to boot into 7. Then your unencrypted linux would not be able to mount it at all. Diskcryptor can also create a bootable live cd before you encrypt. Just in case.
There is also TruPax 5 which creates trucrypt type volumes. It has linux portable versions as well as windows ones and creates a single file from whatever you want to encrypt with no slack, be it files or folders and does not require truecrypt to be installed. With trucrypt, you have to create a volume first and then decide what you want to put in it. Never did like trucrypt.
