Nvidia GT430 Gnome3 fails to start

I have an Nvidia GT430 card, which card is supported with the Verne kernel. Glxinfo reports dri IS supported on screen 0 and glxgears runs at about 450-500 fps (which is about par for the nouveau drivers.) However, the Gnome3 starts in fallback mode, indicating that hardware does not support Gnome3.

What needs to be done/tweaked to get this stupid 3d functionality started? Xdriinfo reports no dri on screen 0 but dmesg and Xorg.0.log report that dri and glx for the nouveau drivers ARE loaded. Lsmod reports (relevant section:
nouveau 580599 2
ttm 55029 1 nouveau
drm_kms_helper 26490 1 nouveau
drm 194532 4 nouveau,ttm,drm_kms_helper

cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory

Info as requested in first line of post. As to installing PROPRIETARY drivers in Fedora, I thought Fedora was close to the FSF guidelines. I don't WANT Nvidia closed source. Precise Pangolin runs the Unity Desktop with its bells and whistles on the nouveau drivers, and the kernel is very close to the one in Verne.

So much for this quote then:
What makes Fedora different?
We fight for software freedom

We try to always do the right thing, and provide only free and open source software. We will fight to protect and promote solutions that anyone can use and redistribute.

That's FedoraProject's view not mine.

P.S The forum isn't part of fedoraproject.org either.
