Okay, just a heads up for those that might be concerned/interested in such things. I have encountered (not this particular model so I cannot speak to it) several models of ASUS and Lenovo laptops, netbooks etc that have the 2,4,6, or 8 GB of RAM hard soldered to the motherboard.

I thought the days of hardwiring RAM were long gone, not so as it appears to be coming back. Consider that if you have failing memory in these units it required either a repair or replacement of the motherboard.

Just a heads up.

Re: Asus Zenbook UX31E

In the case of the Ultrabook, almost certainly so. It's the Intel answer (Intel has its own definition of what a machine should be, regardless of vendor, to be called an ultrabook, though some vendors don't follow their guidelines, at least, they weren't when I read up on it around the beginning of the year), to the Macbook Air. So, as far as I can see, at least with this particular model, it's not meant to be at all user serviceable, and memory would almost certainly be hard soldered.

Re: Asus Zenbook UX31E

As this thread is still the first one that comes up when searching this model with FreeBSD, I'll add that FreeBSD 9.1 RC works with the wired, though not the wireless, when running from live mode. (I didn't install it to check if I could get wireless working).

Re: Asus Zenbook UX31E

Thanks for the info!
Whats the status now with f17?
I have a buddy who never uses his UX31e (crazy apple head) wanting to sell it to me for $1000 bucks.... Are you happy with linux on your ultrabook?
Cheers,
Jon

Re: Asus Zenbook UX31E

Generally, yes. Sometimes, with F17, I get some issues with the speakers crackling--I think that's a Fedora issue, as I haven't had it happen with Arch.

The touchpad isn't great, but when I use it with Ubuntu, where I use the default Unity, checking the disable while typing works.

$1000 seems a bit high though, if it's used. They have them new for right around that price.

Re: Asus Zenbook UX31E

Thanks.
I got the Asus to borrow to see if I like it
I cant get F17 to install though... I have tried all the suggestions HERE and posted my experience there too.
I dont have a great deal of linux experience and I am not sure what you mean when you state: "works with the wired, though not the wireless, when running from live mode."
Is that something to do with the installation?Perhaps (certainly) I am missing something....
Cheers,
Jon

Re: Asus Zenbook UX31E

I meant that if you plug in the USB to ethernet dongle, Fedora 17 should see the connection and be able to do a network install.

(Sorry, you quoted Live Mode--in that case, means that wireless didn't work for whatever reason while running live CD--by wired, I would have meant ethernet connection, using that dongle that comes with the machine.)

Thanks for the help on this thread. BTW, above, you want to run grub2-mkconfig, not grub2-config, at least on F17.

You are quite correct, and I'm going to fix my typo now. (Honest, it was a typo) Thanks for catching it

For the record, here's the relevant bug report for the SD card reader problem: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=748159
