F16 Update has made dual boot sytem unaccessable

Hello all,

I just did my normal yum update and noticed that there was a kenel & nvidia update. So I rebooted my Win7/Fedora16 system and did not get the expected dual boot options. Instead I got GNU GRUB version 1.99 Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported etc, etc. grub>

Did a quick Google search on my backup XP/Fedora 14 system and no one else currently has mentioned any problems. I used the rescue option on my Fedora 16 64Bit DVD and tried to get to my grub.cfg file in /boot/grub2, but that was not possible since I don't know bash-4.2.

I would appreciate any guidene to get me back to being able to edit the grub.cfg file.

Thanks in advance.

Re: F16 Update has made dual boot sytem unaccessable

There is nothing really special about the rescue mode bash prompt. It will function just like your terminal does in Fedora. I would get back to that bash prompt in the DVD's rescue mode. Chroot into your mounted system as instructed by the onscreen comments. Then, at the next command prompt you can regenerate the grub.cfg file with grub2-mkconfig. And while you're at that, I also would re-install the GRUB boot loader to wherever it was already installed with grub2-install. Those two GRUB 2 commands are discussed often around here, so plenty of examples are easy to find for you to figure out the exact command syntax that you need to use for your particular situation.

Re: F16 Update has made dual boot sytem unaccessable (RESOLVED)

Thanks Stoat,

By Googling grub2-mkconfig I found a page with a more complete set of instructions at: http://solidsmoke.blogspot.com/2011/...ting-with.html
  1. At the bash-4.2# prompt I was able to enter: "chroot /mnt/sysimage"
  2. sh-4.2# cp /boot/grub2/grub.cfg /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.Backup
  3. sh-4.2# grub2-mkconfg -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
  4. then rebooted
I did not "re-install the GRUB boot loader to wherever it was already installed with grub2-install" because I was back in Gnome3 and on rebooting was able to start up in Win7.
