Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

I have followed the installation instructions from the first page, logged out and back in (changing to the cinnamon environment from gnome), and even rebooted but there is absolutely no change in my interface.

In the cinnamon settings the extensions are empty. Should there be extensions and if so how do I add them? I tried with dconf-editor, going to org > cinnamon > enabled extensions, and adding:

Quote:
['system-monitor@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com', 'apps-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org', 'dock@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org', 'drive-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org', 'places-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org', 'windowsNavigator@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org', 'xrandr-indicator@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org']
What is going wrong with my install?

You have to select cinnamon at gdm login.
As for the extensions, half of them are obsolete now and some don't work

obsoleted due to applets

places-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org
xrandr-indicator@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org
drive-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org

Known to be broken

dock@gnome-shell-extensions.gnome.org

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

I did select cinnamon at the GDM login so that is not it. I also tried without the extensions (they still don't show up in cinnamon-settings) and didn't have any success there either.

From some of the reading I have done my thinking is that the installation did not add in the cinnamon-themes folder if that is supposed to exist.

Something that I was just thinking about. I have two monitors. Is there a possibility that this is causing a problem?

Cinnamon-themes isn't part of the cinnamon package so that's why the directory doesn't exist.
As for cinnamon not starting, that's likely to be a graphics driver issue (No 3D = gnome fallback session).

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

The AMD Catalyst driver should support the 3D. I do have Xerama enabled and am starting to wonder if it s part of the issue then.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

Mystery solved. The AMD/ATI driver did not install properly. Reinstalled the driver and I now have Cinnamon!!! So sweet! So MUCH better than that Gnome 3 C###.

Thank you so much. As someone else has posted before, you are a hero for returning sanity to the user interface.

A new question now though. If I VNC into the box I don't see the same display anymore. Should I and if so any thoughts on what may have happened?

Leigh,

I just saw your post on the catalyst drivers being garbage and am going to try switching to the open source one to see if I can make all the other things that I want to work.

Hello, I have tried Fedora 16 with Cinnamon 1.1.4 (updated today), this good and fast, I have some problems, including freezing of chrome extensions, which do not work, another is the top bar is under firefox or chrome hiding buttons to minimize, maximize and close, I have observed a slow pressing the menu button, it takes the options to appear, use a Nvidia 6200, may have some relation to these problems?

It's a known issue which they are working on.
