F16: KDE support for GeForce2 MX400 ?

Hi,

My Fedora14 machine using a GeForce2 MX400 video has 1 GB RAM and uses Gnome and KDE. I know it won't run Gnome3 because the video is too old and I doubt it will even run the fall-back mode. A laptop running F14 on Gnome wouldn't even boot into F15 fallback mode because the video (ATI from 2004) is too old. My question is: will it run the KDE version on F16 ?

Thank you for an answer.

Yes, KDE will run on a Geforce2 video card.

But, you have to realize that it is an older card, and you can't try running it with all of the effects enabled.

You may want to try one of the "lighter" desktops instead, like LXDE or XFCE. They run much better on the older video cards. (LXDE and XFCE are more like the old Gnome 2 was, so it won't take a lot for you to get used to using them, either)

About the effects: I just want a nice desktop, no effects needed. I know LXDE and XFCE, I've used both on older machines. Could be an option.

At least KDE won't force you to a "fallback" mode because of your older video card. It will run with it, even though it may be a little slow.

And with that card, you may be better off with the nouveau video driver (which should be used automatically when you install F16) instead of loading the nvidia driver.

Just wondering... Does your motherboard have video on it? If so, what is it. You may be better off running with the onboard video rather than the older nvidia card depending upon what your motherboard has on it.

Re: F16: KDE support for GeForce2 MX400 ?

The pc is a bit slow anyway compared to the others I have, so that won't change. But for just email and some apps it works just fine. And my mainboard has no video so I need a card (pci).

nvidia no longer supports that card ( i have one )
you need to use the opensorce nouveau driver
also with the gforce2 card X11 ( the new one ) dose not support that old card ( 11 year old card )

Now that card does run , with the nouveau driver , under CentOS 6.1 or RHEL 6.1
