Intel HD Graphics 3000 Max Resolution?

Hi There

I just installed Fedora 16 x86_64. My CPU is an i7-2600K with HD Graphics 3000. I did not install a graphics card and my mobo comes with a "D-Sub" VGA/DVI port. My monitor is connected thru a Dual-DVI cable. The maximum resolution I manage to get out of it is 1920x1200. However my monitor is 2500x1600 capable. I was wondering if this is an Intel HD Graphics 3000 or a Fedora 16 limitation?

Thanks,
Erasmo.

Re: Intel HD Graphics 3000 Max Resolution?

The max resolution is a combination of what the monitor itself will support and max resolution, at any given color depth, of what the graphics card driving that monitor will support. You cannot exceed max resolution that your video card, and it's driver, can deliver even though the monitor can support something higher.

I don't know what the limitations are for the Intel HD 3000 graphics chip, but it's usually tied to how much dedicated and/or shared ram is available to the chip. What monitor do you have? Does the spec sheet for your monitor say it's capable of 2500x1600?. If so, at what color depth and refresh rate?

I bet xrandr will tell you that 1920x1200 is all that there is for max resolution.

Re: Intel HD Graphics 3000 Max Resolution?

My monitor is a DELL (WPF30, I think). I know it supports 2500x1600 I get that on my Hackintosh Here's the output from xrandr:

[root@neo vmware]# xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI1 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 641mm x 400mm
1920x1200 60.0*
1600x1200 60.0
1680x1050 60.0
1280x1024 75.0 60.0
1280x800 59.8
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 60.0
800x600 75.0 60.3
640x480 75.0 60.0
720x400 70.1
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I also found an Intel page detailing the max res of the HD Graphics 3000 and it does support 2500x1600. However Fedora only allows me to set 1920x1200 on the System Settings. What am I missing?

Re: Intel HD Graphics 3000 Max Resolution?

OK, then I suppose maybe it's the limitation of the Intel graphics driver Fedora is supplying. Any further conjecture on my part would be just that, conjecture.
But I would conjecture that 1920x1200 is the "native" resolution reported by that monitors edid. That's a 16:10 aspect ratio monitor, as opposed to the now more ubiquitous 16:9 aspect ratio (1080p) used by almost all newer monitors, including laptop screens.

I think you'll need displayport to get 2560x1600

Single link dvi is limited to a maximum resolution of 1920x1200.

If you want higher resolution you need dual link dvi and a dl dvi cable.

Not sure if a 2600k and the motherboard (chipset) will support this.
