Re: yum and Python
Please note the edit I did to my previous post to install the python-libs package. That's what's missing now and causing the missing libpython2.6.so.1.0 error.
If you have not done a updatedb command as root since uninstalling python-libs package, then the locate command is probably not correct.
Use "ls /usr/lib64/libpython2.6.so.1.0" instead to see if it's really there or not.
---------- Post added at 04:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:09 PM ----------
I goofed on the correct command to uninstall python-2.6.2-2.fc12.x86_64 by not typing the full "release" part. Please post the output of
Code:
rpm -qa | grep python
when you get the chance.

Re: yum and Python
Yes. The list says you have both python-2.6.2-8.fc12.x86_64 and python-libs-2.6.2-8.fc12.x86_64 installed. Maybe you deleted individual files when trying to remove everything python instead of using rpm to remove packages.
Try reinstalling the python-libs-2.6.2-8.fc12.x86_64 package.
Code:
rpm --force -Uvh http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/12/x86_64/python-libs-2.6.2-8.fc12.x86_64.rpm

Re: yum and Python
It means that python version 2.6.2-8 is now properly installed and working. Unless you have done the modifications to your /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo so that the mirrorlist= lines are commented out or removed and a new baseurl= line is created that points to the now archived F12 repos, then no, yum won't do updates or install anything except from local files.
---------- Post added at 06:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:39 PM ----------
To make yum work with the archived repos, make the edits shown below:
For the /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file, the first section "[fedora]" should look like this:
Code:
[fedora]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch
failovermethod=priority
baseurl=http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch
For the /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-upates.repo file, the first section "[updates]" should look like this:
Code:
[updates]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Updates
failovermethod=priority
baseurl=http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch
Then, in your /etc/yum.conf file add the line:
That last line will keep yum from trying to "update" the repo metadata every time you use it. Since F12 is long EOL, there is no metadata to update, ever.

Re: yum and Python
hello PabloTwo,
Thanks again for your help !
So, I've checked the files, and here are how they are before I do anything ..
the /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file
Quote:
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=fedora-$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
metadata_expire=7d
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch
|
the /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-upates.repo file :
Quote:
[updates]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Updates
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-f$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch
|
and the /etc/yum.conf file :
Quote:
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum/$basearch/$releasever
keepcache=0
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
exactarch=1
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=1
plugins=1
installonly_limit=3
|
so I change them completely to have the same as you sent me?
I just prefer to have you confirm this, maybe there's something in these files that is specific to my linux configuration and that I should let unchanged...

Yes. You don't have to actually remove the mirrorlist= lines, but if you don't remove them then comment them out by putting a "#" in front of them. "#mirrorlist=......."

Just do a "yum check-update" and see if yum finds the archive repos OK now.

Re: yum and Python
A "repository", as far as yum is concerned, is where rpm packages are downloaded from.
Post the output of:
---------- Post added at 01:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:48 PM ----------
I just rebooted into F12 from F16. Here is what I get with that command:
Code:
BASH:~/-> rpm -qa | grep yum
yum-utils-1.1.26-1.fc12.noarch
yum-metadata-parser-1.1.2-14.fc12.i686
yum-3.2.28-5.fc12.noarch
anaconda-yum-plugins-1.0-5.fc12.noarch
And I get no errors when I do a yum command of any kind. There would appear to be a missing bit of python still, but the error message you got doesn't make it totally clear what. I'll try to see if I can find a python module named "yum".

Re: yum and Python
"python-package" is NOT an rpm package. python-2.6.2-8 is INSTALLED, rpm just told you so.
I think you need to now reinstall these packages:
Code:
rpm --force -ivh http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/12/x86_64/yum-3.2.28-5.fc12.noarch.rpm
rpm --force -ivh http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/12/x86_64/yum-utils-1.1.26-1.fc12.noarch.rpm
rpm --force -ivh http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/12/x86_64/sos-2.2-0.fc12.noarch.rpm
rpm --force -ivh http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/12/x86_64/rpm-python-4.7.2-2.fc12.x86_64.rpm
rpm --force -ivh http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/12/Everything/x86_64/os/Packages/yum-metadata-parser-1.1.2-14.fc12.x86_64.rpm

Re: yum and Python
Hello PabloTwo,
I'va installed everything but it's still missing something as you can see.

If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to
the yum faq at:

I've found some python-url grabber on-line but I don't want to make any mistake by downloading the wrong one.... http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub...c12.noarch.rpm
http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/se...hon-urlgrabber
thanks for your advice.

Re: yum and Python
Use the url's in the commands (the F12 archive repo's ) I'm providing to get the needed packages, and always look in the "updates" repo first. If you don't find it there, then check the "fedora" repo.
Code:
rpm --force -ivh http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/12/x86_64/python-urlgrabber-3.9.1-4.2.fc12.noarch.rpm
There may be a few more packages to install or update before yum is working again.
---------- Post added at 11:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:42 AM ----------
You can browse the F12 archived repos directly in firefox (or whatever browser your using). Use these url's:
For [fedora] repo:
Code:
http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/12/Everything/x86_64/os/Packages/
For [updates] repo:
Code:
http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/12/x86_64/
When you find the package in the list you want, you can just left-click it and it will download. Or you can right-click it and then choose "copy link location" and then paste that onto the command line right after typing "rpm -Uvh " or "rpm --force -Uvh ".
---------- Post added at 11:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:51 AM ----------
Part of the problem here is that I am leading you to install packages from the "updates" repo and all your installed files are from the initial install and from the "fedora" repo. So, until all the "yum" and "python" related files are "updated" from the updates repo so they work together, yum will trip up and fail. Once you get all the needed packages from the update repo, yum will work again and then you can do a full update to the system using yum.
