Fedora 14 access denied following username

Something unusual started happening just a while ago. I typically ssh to a remote computer using ssh. THat used to work great and it still does, BUT....

After the connection is made and I get the "login as" prompt, right after I enter a valid username and press enter the first thing I see is "Access denied", and immediately a prompt for the password. I enter the password and all is well.

This started happening a few weeks ago. The OS is Fedora 14. This computer is running current version of denyhosts. Computer has had regular security patches.

Any thoughts?

Re: FEdora 14 access denied following username

It sounds like sshd on the server may have multiple authentication procedures active.

This can occur as sshd first tests for PKI ("RSAAuthentication yes" and "PubkeyAuthentication yes"). These do not always work, and when they do you get the "denied" message.

Other possibilities that can cause this is are the KerberosAuthentication, KerberosOrLocalPasswd, or KerberosUseKuserok.

It may occur with the GSSAPI options as well.

The major key is having multiple authentication procedures active - those that fail usually (not always) generate a message, then it moves to the next.

I'm most familiar with this happening with the Kerberos options.

Right you were! GSSAPI was set to yes. I changed that and restarted sshd and my problem went away. Thanks.
