Should I install F16?

Hi.

I want a distro that works great with Gnome3.
And I want to use wine for some gaming.

Got a decent computer

Phenom X4 965
8gb ram
Nvidia GTX 580.

Is Fedora the distro for me?

Sure. Use the Fedora Set-Up Guides (above) to assist in codecs, etc. You might want to try the Live CD version to test things. I've also installed Mint-12 and can recommend that as another great Gnome3 distro.

Re: Should I install F16?

And the first thing to do after installing Fedora 16 is to update it, dont bother with anything else first.

I still prefer using the terminal to update over the GUI.

su -c 'yum -y update'

Then start exploring

Re: Should I install F16?

No. If you haven't done your homework, such as going to the fedora project site and learning about the concept and philosophy behind fedora, you are not properly prepared to use it. One must first learn the basics of their tools before attempting to wield them.

Re: Should I install F16?

I am very happy with Gnome3 on Fedora but having only problems with wine. Never got anything running, although it was reported as running without problems (not on Fedora though).

Haha, just when I said that, Gnome3 was not responding anymore when pointing to the upper left corner, which is quite annoying.

How much do you like your data?

Fedora's a decent choice, sure. GNOME 3 is well-integrated. But as Dan said, do read up on Fedora's design and philosophy - it may turn out some of the things that make Fedora Fedora (like a fairly fast pace of change, adherence to upstream, and strict F/OSS principles) might not match up with what you want in a distro. It's certainly worth considering other options like Ubuntu (you can use GNOME Shell instead of Unity quite easily in the latest Ubuntu, I believe), OpenSUSE, and Mint as well. Do the same thing with those distros - read up on their key attributes, and at least to start with, go with whichever one feels like a good fit for your needs.
