Is Fedora A Good Choice For A Server?

After watching the same question drifting through the forums day after day, it seems appropriate to post a sticky about this.

In short ... it's entirely up to you and your tolerance of the unexpected, and your sense of adventure. That being said ...

NO!

It can be done, has been done, is being done, and will no doubt be done in the future. But that doesn't make it the best available choice.

I will leave it to you to do your own homework on the issue, but to guide your search, you may wish to consider the following:

• Short lifespan of any given release.
• Forum based support
• Vunderbork updates
• Desktop focus
• Gradual elimination of needed tools for server administration

Better (RPM based) choices are:

• Redhat Enterprise Linux
• CentOS
• Scientific Linux

There are more, but that's all I'm going to list. Want more? Go find 'em.



Of the above, I strongly recommend Redhat. If you purchase a release from them, you may also purchase the appropriate support/service contract. They get paid to listen to the frustrated complaints, and smooth the ruffled feathers. We do not. Therefore, the reaction and solution to your problem will be a lot more predictable, especially in the face of peevish or angry customers.
