Unhappy Annoying WEP Password Prompt on Failed Connections

Hello all.

I have a simple problem, but hopefully a fixable one. When I'm working in certain rooms at home that are just at the edge of wifi reception, I sometimes do and sometimes don't get a signal. The problem is that I do ideally want to be connected when possible, and I don't want the computer to give up trying while I'm working on things locally.

Unfortunately, Gnome has an annoying habit of demanding I confirm the WEP password in a way that give focus directly to the password field while I'm typing something else. I know the password is correct because it works fine closer to the router- I don't need Gnome constantly prompting me to reenter it while I'm trying to get work done.

Is there a way to edit a configuration file so that Gnome shuts up and keeps trying without me having to babysit the process?
