DVD won't played

I have Fedora 15. I updated all required libraries for playing commercial DVDs but still can't play them. I try VLC and MPlayer but the software doesn't seem to read any chapter at all. Every time I press PLAY, no error message is displayed and the software (both VLC and MPlayer) gives me a black screen and quickly returns to the original player's GUI. The software appears to see the title of the move fine but doesn't play it. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: DVD won't played

What are all the required libraries for playing commercial DVDs? You installed what was needed according to the Fedora Setup Guides?

Re: DVD won't played

what did you install ?

the list of "required" that you installed would help

AND so would the UNNAMED ERROR
please post the FULL error

libdvdcss and libdvdread, and libdvdnav are needed

if you use Dangermouses auto-ten that will install what you need.

I can't get encrypted dvds to work either. I have installed everything from dangermouse, and dvdcss2. I am not sure what else to try.

Any help?

Re: DVD won't played

Regarding to my original post

I didn't get any error message at all. When ever I tried to play a DVD with VLC or Movie Player, both programs appeared to find the Video_TS.VOB fine but the file is too short, less than 1 sec. I also tried to open each video file (chapter) separately and both VLC and MoviePlayer found that the chapters are too short, less than 1sec each.

Re: DVD won't played

in VLC you navigate to the dvd drive
you do not open up an individual vob file

it looks like you did NOT install "libdvdcss " from ATRpm
that IS NEEDED an can NOT be hosted inside the USA
it is illegal in the usa ( it violates DMCA )

Re: DVD won't played

I did have libdvdcss installed, but I unistalled it and went to atrpms and installed the version there just in case I had a "bad version" somehow (I also reinstalled mplayer, and vlc).

It still does not work.

I am really at a loss here. My dvds work fine on my ubuntu netbook and laptop, but not on my fedora labtop.

Can I post some output of some kind to help trouble-shoot this?

In xine, I am getting "audio decoder" errors. Does that help?

I just checked it with an unencrypted DVD and mplayer is working fine, and again the encrypted one works on other linux distros. This seems to be a simple thing, just install libdvdcss, right? What could possibly be wrong?

I am working on a e6410 dell laptop. I am running fc 12, 14 and 16 on desktops I have at work. I will try them tomorrow and see if it is only my laptop.

Hello
if you haven't already, try
Code:
mplayer -nocache dvdnav://
you should get something like

Here is the output (which shows that libdvdcss is there and trying but failing for some reason):

Re: DVD won't played

looks to me you have the video codecs installed (libdvdcss) but not the audio, maybe just as a trial to make sure you have all codecs use autoplus to install all codecs.
If it then plays unencrypted dvd's but not encrypted dvds the it could be a region problem..

Re: DVD won't played

Thank you Dangermouse for replying.

I have installed everything from autoplus and it still does not work (I just reinstalled the mp3 codecs using autoplus to be sure).

Also, the encrypted DVD works on ubuntu and on a DVD player all in the same "region" as the laptop. More still, an unencrypted DVD works fine on my fc15 laptop (with sound, etc.).

I can't believe this is that hard. It sounds like most people are not having this kind of problem, but whatever it is it is real.

I have not done any "meddling" with the system. I only have followed the instructions on http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...html#libdvdcss and on http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfec...-15-i686-gnome, and also used autoplus.

Re: DVD won't played

OK, I confirmed that autoplus DOES work on my desktops (1 running fc15 and 1 running fc16), but it does not work on my dell laptop. Also, I have tried it on another dell laptop and it doesn't work there either (one of the laptops was upgradeed from fc13 where encrypted dvds also did not work after installing libdvdcss, but the other laptop is newer with a freshly installed fc16 and does not play encrypted dvds after installing all codecs from autoplus).

So it seems this codecs issue might be somehow connected to the intel based dell laptops???

I really am not versed in this kind of trouble shooting, but is there any kind of further data I can supply?

OK, here is an idea:

Does someone know a procedure to configure this "by hand"? I am happy creating folders, adding permissions, creating links, editing configuration files, etc. to configure mplayer step-by-step if needed.

Of course it would be nice if something like autoplus actually worked for me, but since it does not, I would like an alternative.
