F16 Boot loader failed to install

I have a ASUS Eee PC 1000HE. It dual boots Fedora and Win7, and I keep my /home in it's own partition. I have been running Fedora on it since Fedora 11, and each time I clean install while retaining my .home directory without issue.

With Fedora 16, at the end of the installation when it attempts to install the boot loader, it fails with the error 'The bootloader failed to install. Your system may not boot" And it doesn't boot. I'm sure this is related to the change to grub2.

I tried just too see if it would make any difference using a Win7 disc to install Microsoft's boot loader and then have Fedora 16 try to install the bootloader again, I received the same message.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot or fix this?

hello,

you can switch to a shell when you have the error message (ctrl-alt-f2)
then you can see what would be your installation :
either cd /mnt/sysimage or just chroot /mnt/sysimage)
in the new root, go to /root to see install log (and storage log) and find the error message
you can also find grub file which were generated on the filesystem

alternatively, you can boot in rescue mode and mount your file system to find the log file.

So I discovered /dev/sda was too close to the front of the disk not leaving
enough room to install the grub2 bootloader. I re-sized the partition and moved
it back from the disk, then re-installed grub2 and success! Fedora 16 now
boots. As for Win7, it didn't survive the re-size and I'm going to delete it as
it sucks anyway.

I seem to be having the same issue. I tried fedora 16 and couldn't even get to the installation screen. Then I tried fedora 17 and it took 2-3 reboots and it eventually loaded the installer. After completing it said that the bootloader failed to install and that the system might not boot, well it didn't. I don't have any other OS running, I let fedora take over the whole disk. How can I fix this and install grub?

What kind of a macbook is this?

How many HDDs do you have?

It's not a MacBook, it's a PC and I don't have any other OS running. So it's a fresh install of fedora 17. I managed to fix the bootloader issue and installed it. Then I tried to install the nvidia driver and when I reboot my screen goes blank. Any ideas?
