radeon hd 4250 and gnome shell

Hi,
has anyone managed to use this gpu to run gnome-shell in fedora 16 with ok performance?
I have a quad core athlon on an asus mainboard with integrated graphics.
I tried overriding fallback mode but it became horribly slow. I suspect this was because the open source driver was using the llvm pipe thing. gnome3 in fallback mode is otherwise close to useless for me, freezing very often especially if firefox or chrome is open. luckily xfce seems to be very robust.

to answer myself, yes it works, but the fedora 16 installer messed up.

after removing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and removing the word nomodeset from the kernel boot line (I think
/etc/default/grub is the most correct place to do this) the gnome shell works far more stable with the xorg radeon driver.
