Help with root/administrator password

I'm a brand new Fedora user, but have used Ubuntu for a while and they seem pretty similar.

I'm having a problem trying to install an .rpm file, as I get the authorization message , type in my password (the one I use when I log on) and it says 'authentication failure'.

I'm also unable to overcome this by using a terminal to install, as I can't become super user when it rejects my password.

I've changed my password using the 'passwd' command and it changes my login password but still does not let me authorize any system changes/installs etc.

As I say, I'm brand new to Fedora, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ridley.

Re: Help with root/administrator password

Fedora is quite different from Ubuntu: for administration tasks you don't have to enter your password, but the root password.
Fedora doesn't use sudo to accomplish administrative tasks and the user you created at install cannot do root job. (at install time Anaconda asked you also to enter a root password)

Re: Help with root/administrator password

My user password and the root password I entered were both the same, and I still get the authentication failure message on trying to install or trying to exectue 'su -', is there anyway I can reset my root password/install without authentication?

that's the problem, when I enter my root password it says it is incorrect, and I'm sure it's not

Re: Help with root/administrator password

then u need to break your root password, hope either you don't set the grub password or you remember it.
follow this,
- reboot your system
- at grub menu select the kernel version you want to boot (by pressing spacebar and up-down arrow key), and press 'e' key
- at the end enter space and then '1'
- press 'b' to boot
you will be in single user-mode, enter following command to reset root password:
# passwd
newpassword-for-root
confirm-newpassword-for-root

# reboot

I'll have to remember it this time.
