Belkin N Wireless USB Adapter F5D8053 v6

Dear all, once again I wanted to try Fedora (tried 1-2 years ago but stayed with ubuntu).

Fedora unlike other distros doesn't seem to recognise my Wi-Fi adapter.

The adapter is Belkin N Wireless USB Adapter F5D8053 v6
and lsusb on Fedora 16 gave back the chipset RTL8192SU while Windows 7, when installed the driver, recocgnised it as RTL8191S.

So, I cannot download anything from that installation (I can though from my Win7 partition). Any suggestions?

Hello jastonas

It would be helpful to know what 'lsusb' in Ubuntu recognises the card as.

Hello jastonas

There's an interesting archived thread here that refers to the rtl8192SU.

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archiv.../t-253126.html

I think at least part of that has been overtaken by events, in that I believe that the kmod staging package for rtl8192 is now in the kernel.

If you look in the /lib/firmware folder that the thread mentions, on your machine you'll see a folder for RTL8192E, so maybe it's just a case of getting the correct firmware and putting it in the /lib/firmware folder as that thread suggests.

It might give an indication of if that is so by running the command:

Code:
lsmod | grep 819
to see if the rtl module is actually loading.

Don't be too concerned about the exact designation of the module. For my rtl8191SE which has recently begun to work in Fedora with the included driver, that command reports that it is using the rtl8192SE driver.

It certainly won't hurt to try putting that firmware in place. It won't break anything else.

Did you get this working? This is basically the only reason i'm not using fedora right now.

I gave up trying since the solution proposed includes this command "yum install kmod-staging unzip" which requires internet. I don't have access, unelss I fix my adapter.

I switched back to ubuntu installing gnome shell and a lot of extensions and I am happy again

yea the kmod-staging works. Luckily i have another wireless card in my computer that has 802.11g on it that works after installing fedora 16. Hopefully fedora 17 includes it by default
