ThinkPad T420 HDAPS Tilt Protection (Fedora 16)

Hello everyone.

I currently own a ThinkPad T420i and so far Fedora 16 works lovely on it. I have installed a version of tp_smapi that has been modified to whitelist this machine for use and installed hdaps from the repo. Sadly when I go to test it out ("sudo hdapsd") it still tells me there is no a suitable device.

[root@thinkpad-jm jmanes]# hdapsd
Thu Nov 10 14:50:43 2011: Starting hdapsd
Thu Nov 10 14:50:43 2011: WARNING: You did not supply any devices to protect, trying autodetection.
Thu Nov 10 14:50:43 2011: Adding autodetected device: sda
Thu Nov 10 14:50:43 2011: Could not find a suitable interface
[root@thinkpad-jm jmanes]#

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Re: ThinkPad T420 HDAPS Tilt Protection (Fedora 16)

Interesting - I have a T510 and I've been building my own modified tp_smapi driver for some time.
The one at the thinkwiki website has been frequently out of date.

So my question: where did you get a tp_smapi drive that builds ? Which Fedora ?

Once you've built and installed the tp_smapi.ko driver, then you need to load the driver with a
sudo modprobe tp_smapi
of also
hdaps.ko
After that the tp_smapi variables in /sys/devices/platform/smapi should exist.

If you want that to happen at boot automagically you should add a config file like .....

/etc/sysconfig/modules/tpad.modules:

Code:
#!/bin/bash

load()
{
    lsmod | grep -q $1 || /sbin/modprobe $1 >/dev/null 2>&1
}

# mainline kernel driver, hdaps not required for SSD
load thinkpad_acpi
#
# non-kernel driver
load thinkpad_ec
load hdaps
#
# non-kernel driver
load tp_smapi

You *MAY* need/want to tailor that for your system.

BTW - IF you have a typical IBM smart battery I have a script (uses tp_smapi) that allows you to manage the charge level and this can extend the battery lifespan by years.

I' m about to leave on a vacation, but I'll scan for PMs if you are interested and and r PM me.

Oh - on your problem.

Immedaitely after you try the
sudo modprobe hdaps
command and it fails - then luse the
dmesg
command and look for some error messages at the end like ....
[45024.930443] hdaps: supported laptop not found!
[45024.930449] hdaps: driver init failed (ret=-19)!

Re: ThinkPad T420 HDAPS Tilt Protection (Fedora 16)

I grabbed the driver from the Ubuntu people here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tp-smapi/0.41-1

It compiles and works fine on Ubuntu, but I am tired of Unity and would rather just have lovely Gnome 3. So this was the only thing preventing me from using Fedora. I'll try it out and let you know if it works
