I also am unable to log in to the server. I have a question: what rpms do you have to have installed to get the cyrus-imapd server working? I had to install cyrus-imapd and cyrus-imapd-utils before I had the files that show up on how tos on the internet. What did you install?

You should execute cyradm for create user mailbox in Cyrus first.
example:
cyradm -user cyrus localhost

Isn't there a way to have cyrus use the /etc/shadow to authenticate without having to explicitly create accounts?

I think cyrus uses its own mailstore in /var/spool/imap and uses the permissions from the system logins to allow access.

If there is a way I'd really like to know. I know you can use authentication with an Ldap sever but the usernames have to be the same...

Normally you'd build a script to do it for you (create the user and then the mailbox)
