F16 RC5 impending, please help test

Quote:
So, that thing yesterday about RC4 being one last big push? I lied!

We found two more blockers this morning, fixed 'em, and had our arms
twisted at the go/no-go meeting to try and make it to go before the
release readiness meeting tomorrow. So the go/no-go decision is delayed,
and an RC5 is just about to be built. Should land within a couple hours.

There's only one changed package in RC5, but it's anaconda. (Well,
fedora-release-notes too, but that's not important). So, we should try
to get the installation matrix re-done, but we don't really need to
re-do base and desktop; we can trust the RC4 results for those two.

The bugs fixed are:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=750469
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=750896

I don't want anyone to feel like they need to pull crazy stunts to get
the validation done in time - if we can't make it, we can't make it, and
we slip a week, it's not a disaster. But if we can make it that'd be
great.

Thanks all!
AdamW

I asked my magic eight ball (just for fun), and it came out saying maybe.

Man the red hat guys need to get it out there. Waiting for new software is getting me so pumped. Especially when its Fedora. I need to have it, thats what I need not waiting.

I hope they can make it on time. I really do, and then people will be like: give it to me give it to me and celebrating their new OS.

But I agree that a unfixable bug (does that exists?) isn't good to push out. Since I haven't been here from the start all these RC's make me think: how many RC's are usually pushed before a final version?

Re: F16 RC5 impending, please help test

birdwatcher: there are some types of bugs that are effectively impossible to fix once the release is done: bugs in the installer and bugs that affect the live environment. neither of these can be fixed by updates, so even if we issue updates with the patches to 'fix' the bugs, the released images will always have the bugs. those are the type of bugs we take as release blockers.

we spin as many RCs as are necessary to get a build which passes the full set of validation tests:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_...tallation_Test
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_...rent_Base_Test
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_...t_Desktop_Test

whether that's a lot or a few depends on how many bugs we find, and when. five RCs is quite a lot, I don't think we've been past six before, but we'd likely have had fewer if we'd had more time to do the validation. we did once cut a release on a single RC - the first RC spun passed all tests and was released.

note that it's not just 'the red hat guys', there are many many non-RH staff involved in the development, release engineering and testing tasks that make up the release cycle.

I download iso's with KGet as they seem to download faster then using the normal Firefox downloading tool.

Re: F16 RC5 impending, please help test

yeah, rc5 is final.

http://serverbeach1.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/ is a mirror of alt with a bit more bandwidth, but don't go telling everyone; it's easy for both alt and sb1 to get overloaded if too many people hit 'em

not much better i'll wait till the torrents are available. i dunno what it could be slowing my downloads down, iv'e disabled ipv6 in windows to. only thing i can think of it be my isp uses a odd port but i still cant see that being the problem as when i as in linux i goit rather super fast speeds.

Re: F16 RC5 impending, please help test

Hi,

I want to install FC16 on my machine.
Should I wait till tuesday or download and install the RC5 right now?
Is it same as the final release?
Will I need to re-install the final release again?

Thanks,
Elison
