Remote from XP machine to Fedora Box

First please excuse my ignorance! I’m new to Fedora and Linux. Recently we installed a Fedora Box on a piece of equipment used in our distribution center. We would like to remote to it across our LAN (Windows). I’ve read many posts on the sight, but don’t understand the terminology yet. What needs to be installed on the Windows box and the Fedora box? Once installed what is the process for making the connection? I feel like a real idiot asking these questions, but started in a Windows world and never exposed to Linux. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Remote from XP machine to Fedora Box

that depends on what you are referring to.

Are you looking to access files that are on your linux box from your windows machines? If so, you need samba server on the linux machine.

Are you looking to access files that are on your windows machine from your linux machine? You need nothing. just mount the share as a cifs filesystem.

Are you looking to ssh into the linux box from windows? look at installing an app like putty on your windows machine

You need to determine exactly what you wish to do and ask more directed questions to get a good answer.

Re: Remote from XP machine to Fedora Box

Thanks for the reply. Basically we need to see the desktop (GUI) of the Fedora box so we can make changes to the system on the fly. Similar to RDP on a Windows box. Nothing to do with command line or the file system.

Re: Remote from XP machine to Fedora Box

You can do that several ways.. One way is to use vnc..

here is a page from the fedora user guide that explains it..

Re: Remote from XP machine to Fedora Box

Thanks, the link makes is somewhat clearer. So the Fedora box will have the client installed by default? All we need to do is enable it? Correct?

Re: Remote from XP machine to Fedora Box

I believe it is now being installed by default now if you install the gnome desktop. So, yes, it should be there, just enable it.

You would need to install a vnc client on the windows machine, though.

Thanks, appreciate the help. Getting a lot of heat from the plant superintendent to get this done. He doesn’t want to leave his cushy office! LOL

Re: Remote from XP machine to Fedora Box

I'd go the nx or xrdp route instead. If it's a trused environment, or you can always tunnel it i suppose, I'd just run with xrdp. Then three guys won't fight for the same keyboard and mouse.

Code:
su
yum install xrdp
chkconfig xrdp on
service xrdp retart

Then set the firewall.
Now you can access it with a Winbloz RDP client.
