This is written as a blog post just so you know and think im strange =)
Anyway this helped me out

So been experimenting alot with this grapichs stuff today, after a long time of reading i finally found a way to power off the ATI card and only use the integrated Intel.

Some might say why? basically cause im using the open source drivers and they work really good, dont do heavy gfx or gaming.

And also cause it save alot of energy + it keep the fans almost quiet and the computer pretty cool, before i did this it was hot as hell

Oh btw i also changed some settings with Hdparm, had alot of spin ups that made the hdd make a clicky sound, but thats also taken care of hehe...productive day.

All this requires some Terminal work and reading, but i have prepared a little package for you containing the 2 sites i used to get this up and running.

So basically unpack and open the .html files and make your computer happy.

I don't even want to think about what kind of weird stuff (flashing bios) i had to do in order to switch nvidia gpu on my sony z12 laptop. I had exactly same intentions as you - battery life, open source drivers etc... it works well now, but i did void my warranty...hopefully nothing will break on this (very expensive) laptop
