Unable to install FC15 from DVD

Tried on two computers, one laptop, one desktop. Downloaded DVD iso image and burned to DVD. Booted from CD and boot loader appears, and started count down. After the count down finished, nothing happen. Then I downloaded the netinstall image and repeat the procedure but with exact same result, nothing happened after the count down.

I tested the download iso by installing it to a VMware VM, and installation completed.

I don't even know where to start trouble shooting

The only thing common between the two machine is the Nvidia graphic chip.

Please help

Alex

Re: Unable to install FC15 from DVD

I assume you install to vmware by pointing VMWare to the iso file on the hard drive. Did you try pointing Vmware at the physical DVD disk you burned? This might help find if there's a problem with the actual burned disk

Re: Unable to install FC15 from DVD

Does the installation DVD offer both installation and Live boot? It looks like that if I put the dvd onto a physical machine, it boot with GRUB loader but unable to boot.

I can install in VMWare with both iso image and dvd disk

Ok, that was what I meant, by doing that you're confirming that the disk is ok

Talking Re: Unable to install FC15 from DVD - Quit Linux and return to Windows 7

After more than 10 years experiences with Linux since RedHat6.2 and all the way to Fedora 13, I finally decided to quit Fedora since FC15.

The changes are just too much and it totally changes the user experiences. I cannot even perform a clean install on a harddisk over my existing FC13. It looks like that the installation disk insists on booting to a live system but after Grub loader count down, nothing happens. I had to install it with a live CD but that's only for x86.

After installation, Xine crashes on every format of video files. Not to mention that Gnome does not allow me to put short cut icons on the desktop. Now opening a terminal is a three steps process.

I enjoyed the day when I needed to change the source code in order to make Liinux installable on a hardware, but now Fedora departs too far away from the fundamental principle of open source movement - users' freedom of choice (except that I still have the freedom to choose another OS).

Re: Unable to install FC15 from DVD

how is Openiong a terminal in F15 a 3 step process?

if you go to Activities > Applications > ALL > Terminal - An Add it to Favorites it only takes 2.

what you failed to say also is what Hardware do you have? give us your system specs

Re: Unable to install FC15 from DVD

What happens if you press a key during the countdown? Do you see the Grub list?

Also, I see that you are unhappy with Gnome3, but that is not the fault of the Fedora Devs.

Re: Unable to install FC15 from DVD

Here is more information on my problem:
Two computers : one laptop and on desktop, both are running FC13 for 2 years now without any problem.

There are two behaviours for the installation dvd:

1) Boot to Grub boot loader and start 15 seconds count down, but nothing happens. I can enter into grub command line to change kernel parameters, such as noacpi, noapic .. etc and still same result, nothing happens.

2) If I put another harddisk, which has another OS installed, into my laptop, then the installation dvd will boot to installation menu and ask me what do I want to do. I can also successfully install a copy of FC15 on a VM on ESXi server.

I totally respect the developers of the Fedora project for putting in so much hard work to make Fedora available to everyone. As I mentioned in my last post that I enjoyed the date when I need to hack the source code to make Linux installable on my hardware but I think it is just too much for me now to jump hops and loops every time I upgrade to another version. And of course the trigger for me to switch is Gnome 3 that totally changed the user experiences.

Although Windows is still evil but there are enough opensource applications that run on Windows that make it useful without installing Office, Projects, Visio and Adobe.

Re: Unable to install FC15 from DVD

Just as a follow up to my post. After a final try the installation dvd finally booted to installation menu and I have successfully installed FC15 on my laptop. As usual, I spent a few days to install all the programs that I need.

Openoffice.org3 (no, not libre office), Xine with non free library, MP3 library and Nvidia driver from Nvidia.com (no, not kmod-Nvidia)

I also found out that I can actually keep my good old desktop icons by installing the gnome-tweak-tool. I also installed gnome-shell-extensions-alternative-status-menu for a task bar equivalent (finally opening a terminal shell is a one step process) . Now I miss my stock ticker and CPU frequency control applet.

I have to admit that gnome 3 is faster than previous versions and it looks good too. However, the installation dvd is still buggy.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

Alex
