fstab is being modified by some guy named hal and i don't like it

Hello,
The hal daemon modifies my fstab file, and i can't figure out how to just edit it myself. is there a ui for hal? or a config file? what exactly does hal do, and is it usefull? i kinda don't like how it puts everything in /media/ i like it better in /mnt . I wish things were just simplier. thanks for any help
