Question After a fresh install my /root partition says full... but 28.4GB is free

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum. Been reading for a while. Been triple booting fedora 15, win 7 and ubuntu 11.04 previously but after a lot of problems I decided to wipe my drive, re-partition and start fresh. Thanks in advance for any help.

First os i installed on the fresh new partitions was fedora 15. A 200mb ext2 boot primary partition and and an extended partition with 30gb root ext4, 5gb /tmp and 10gb /home partition for fedora. After a great install (always is with fedora, headache always with ubuntu) my root folder says its full, 100% usage. Yum will not update because it says it's full. Disk usage analyzer says my root partition capacity is 33.4GB, currently 5.GB used, 28.4GB free but also that usage is 100%. 28.4GB free but usage is 100%.
Below it, it says total file system usage 5GB 14.9%. Nothing else.
Anyone know what could be the problem?

If it's any help, I was getting weird I/O errors on windows when trying to download with QBittorrent and Unbuntu would not install after 3 days of trying with very little sleep with I/O errors as well. So I decided to wipe and reformat. After reformat i tried installing Ubuntu again but continued to get I/O errors. So after another reformat I installed fedora 15 and that's where I am now.

I'm worried this could be a hard drive failure. I'll appreciate any help. Thanks.

Re: After a fresh install my /root partition says full... but 28.4GB is free

According to the numbers you mentioned, your full hd offers you like 30 to 40gb space totaly?
This said, i'd try it with such a hd layout:
/boot: 500mb
/swap: 5'000mb
---------------------
/root: 15'000mb
/home: 15'000mb
If you still have free disk space i'd spare them equaly on /root and /home.

However, if you have more harddisk space, i'd set /root to maximal 50gb, and spend the rest (30gb+) to /home.
If you have less disk space, i'd give root more space (20) and the rest (~10) to home, and install as less software as required, to get a 'starting point'.

EDIT:
Before re-installing f15, try running fsck on unmounted drives.

To analyze please post the output of
Code:
mount
df
du -kx --max-depth=1 / | sort -nr
Please copy and paste for better and exact readability.
