No USB 3.0 Support

Hi All,

I'm on a Fedora Core 14 machine with a Asus Systemboard that has 2 USB 3.0 ports. I purchased a Western Digital 'My Book Essential' hard drive that has USB 3.0 support. In fact, it only has a USB 3.0 Cable, no regular cable.

When I plug the drive into the USB 3.0 port of my FC 14 machine, it doesn't mount. In fact, there's no message of any kind in 'dmesg'. If I plug the drive into a USB 2.0 port, it works fine, however data transfer speeds are only that of USB 2.0: about 25 mbytes/second.

I've asked this question before, but nobody answered. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Does Fedora support USB 3.0 drives? Does anyone know why my 3.0 drive won't mount as a 3.0 drive? Am I asked the wrong question?

Thanks

Re: No USB 3.0 Support

from: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common...ts_not_working

Due to USB 3.0 support preventing users from being able to suspend their laptops, it has been disabled by default for the release of Fedora 14. USB 2.0 ports (ehci_hcd) will continue to work as expected. If support for USB 3.0 is more important to you than support for suspend/resume is not necessary, you can pass the kernel parameter xhci.enable=1, which will allow the xHCI support to load. There is also a workaround which will allow you to enable USB 3.0 support and still suspend successfully. After adding the xhci.enable=1 kernel parameter, create a file named /etc/pm/config.d/xhci, with the contents:

Code:
SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci"

Re: No USB 3.0 Support

I tried to set the Kernel Parameter and here is what happened:
Quote:
> sysctl -w xhci.enable=1
error: "xhci.enable" is an unknown key
What did I do wrong? How do I set the Kernel Parameter?

I think you need to edit /etc/grub.conf and add the "xhci.enable=1" to the end of the long list of options following the line starting "kernel". You will need to be root to edit /etc/grub.conf so perhaps use
Code:
su -c 'gedit /etc/grub.conf'
and then you will need to re-boot to have the new kernel option take effect.

Re: No USB 3.0 Support

I did the change in /etc/grub.conf, rebooted, and then the USB 3.0 disk seemed to mount fine. Then I started copying lots of files to it and after a few hours, it somehow broke. The drive unmounted and won't mount again (this is a brand new Western Digital disk drive). I tried mounting another USB 3.0 drive and it mounted fine, but seems to be at USB 2.0 speeds. When I copy data to it, it's only about 25 MB/sec. What's going on?
