rp-pppoe package missing

Hi,

I have just installed Fedora 14 and I am trying to connect to a DSL internet connection but it does not work at all. It says that a package called rp-pppoe is not installed. How do I install it if there is no internet connection? Can I use the Fedora DVD to install this package? What is the command to do so? Thanks..

I just found something on the net. Here it is

http://iamcam.wordpress.com/2009/03/...yum-repo-list/

Here a process involving some modifications to the /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file, but I am not sure how much of it applies to Fedora 14 as this is basically related to Fedora 10 as mentioned by the author. Thanks...

The Fedora 14 DVD is in a good condition, but when I insert it into the DVD drive and try to see its contents there is an error message - malformed url - although this same DVD works fine when it comes to installing Fedora 14. Please guide me, thanks.

Re: rp-pppoe package missing

that link above will work on Fedora 14 as well, even though it is written for Fedora 10.

You will need to change the baseurl line since it has the Fedora 10 DVD name hard coded in it.

Put something like this

Code:
baseurl=file:///media/Fedora%20$releasever%20$basearch%20DVD

Re: rp-pppoe package missing

I use /sbin/eth0 up(or down) to start/stop internet, after configuring eth0 with proper IP and DNS server IPs.
you can try that if you want,as there will be no need of any package..

Re: rp-pppoe package missing

That would depend on his DSL modem.

If the modem is able to do the authentication with his ISP and the pppoe, then he can set it up in his linux box as standard ethernet.

However if his modem isn't set up or won't work that way, then he must set up pppoe on his box so it can do the authentication, etc...

Do you mean that I should type the command as follows to start/stop the connection?

Code:
/sbin/eth0 up
Thanks a lot.

My connection is just a cable (cat 5, I think) coming to my home from a switch on the terrance of my building. There is no modem or router involved here. But yes, there is a user name and password. And in Windows I need to connect using a connection window. My situation is a bit weird to start with, so sorry if it sounds a bit odd. Thanks.

even if I follow the instructions on the wordpress url, what is the next step? what commands should I type in a terminal to install packages from the Fedora 14 DVD? I have no clue as to what packages are there on the DVD, as whenever I insert it into the DVD drive and try to see its contents there is an error - malformed url- can't understand what to do? Please guide me thanks.

Re: rp-pppoe package missing

In my Fedora 14 I went to System>Preferences>Network Connections

When tried to set up a DSL connection I got the error - Saving connection failed: (0), can't write connection type 'pppoe'.

Then I went to System>Administration>Network>Network Configuration Window (GUI)

I tried to create a new connection - XDSL type but there was again an error - You have to install the following packages, which are needed on your system - rp-pppoe

Thanks
