Exclamation WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

i recently bought a Coby netbook, and the track pad doesn't work at all if i'm using linux, (i currently have fedora 15, and gnome 3.0.1) it works fine with windows. and also, the keyboard sometimes glitches and my typing would look like thisssssssssssssssssss

does anyone have any idea on how to fix these problems? i would like to just find a .rpm or something with the drivers or whatever (I have always hated using tar balls)

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

Are there any errors in the X server log "/var/log/Xorg.0.log"?
Also you need to find what kind of device you have, post the relevant lines from "cat /proc/bus/input/devices"

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

I'm not familiar with Gnome 3--but isn't there a setting in there?

I believe (and I'm going on the memory of an old man, based on some forum posts) that Gnome turns the trackpad off by default and you have to turn it on in the settings.

DISCLAIMER--the above could be completely incorrect, or, even if correct, no longer true. As I said, I don't use Gnome. However, I'm sure there is a place for setting trackpad preferences.

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

smr54, i have gone through the settings for the mouse and trackpad, but can't find anything to turn the trackpad on, and my keyboard still glitches sometimes, it screwed up my typing twice while composing this.

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

Out of curiosity, have you tried some other liveCDs, for example, Ubuntu or Mint, to see if it's a Fedora (and possibly only Gnome 3) issue?

Sorry I can't be of more help. I haven't put F15 on anything with a touchpad.

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

Hello monkeyboy199271

I've been looking at my touchpad computers since you first posted.

They have a range of touchpads on them. I've seen the usual Synaptic, the less usual Alps and the very unusual Sentelic.

The first two work with the Synaptic driver although the Alps needs some settings changing. The Sentelic gets configured as a basic mouse and uses the PS2 driver. OK for movement and tapping but not scrolling.

The point of that is that they all turn up in the output of "cat /proc/bus/input/devices".

Do you know how this device gets identified under Windows?

If it's one of the three I mentioned and it's not in "input/devices" then it almost sounds as if there is a switch, mechanical or electrical that's not turning on in Linux and that's one problem.

If it's a completely different touchpad maybe Linux doesn't understand it.

I'm not sure what the answer is in either event, but it might help to narrow down the problem.

Does the netbook have a model number?

Hello monkeyboy199271

M'mmm, not much information to be gleaned from Google, you seem to be the only person asking about this particular device in conjunction with the word "Linux".

How about the answers to the other two questions.

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

According to this your netbook has a Synaptics touchpad.
http://www.cobyusa.com/?p=prod&prod_...0&pcat_id=5001

Try using xinput to control it. You need to have xorg-x11-apps installed to use xinput.

After xorg-x11-apps is installed, open Terminal and log in as root. Next run the following command and see if your Synaptics touchpad shows up.

Code:
xinput -list
See following for some info:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=267052

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Input

EDIT: You could also try controlling your touchpad with gpointing-device-settings, but I have had mixed results with that. After installing gpointing-device-settings, you can run it from terminal to set up your touchpad in a GUI. My complaint with gpointing-device-settings is that after a logout/login or reboot, you have to reconfigure all changes again.

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

ok i have it installed, i ran the command and i got:

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ USB Optical Mouse id=9 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ USB 2.0 CAMERA id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]

so it is showing two pointing devices, the first one must be the trackpad...the other is my mouse...now that i know the computer detects the trackpad, how do i get it working?
EDIT:ok-not two pointing devices...

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

I don't think your TouchPad is being recognized yet. Maybe the following will work for you.

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopi...241002#p398960

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection

You could also try using a different kernel. I had a similar problem one time and had to use a different kernel.

Re: WTF? new netbook, track-pad doesn't work

ok, David Batson seems to be right, it's showing 1 mouse... :o
i installed gpointing device...that shows the mouse but not the trackpad
i'm wondering, if it is a kernel problem, which Linux kernel would work?...(i'd rather not mess with the kernel if possible though.) and the links above are for mint and Ubuntu, would the commands for these distros translate well to fedora?
