USB Crashes While Copying On Fedora 15/GNOME 3

This usb crashes every time copying about 1,200 files of size 800k - 1.2m. Some right away and others randomly. Using the file manager and dragging the image folders from the USB to the local drive. Upon the crash, the USB cannot be used for anything until the system is rebooted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Below are the error messages from GNOME 3 and dmesg

GNOME 3 messages:

Error splicing file: Input/output error

A dialog window would ask to Cancel, Skip All or Skip. but by this time the USB had already stopped.

dmseg output:

Re: USB Crashes While Copying On Fedora 15/GNOME 3

Is this a SDcard you are writing to? Which filesystem is the card formatted to? Did you try to check the filesystem after the crash and then re-mount it?

1. yes it is an sd card, 8gb. going from the sd card to the local drive
2. filesystem was formatted with the nikon D90 camera. fyi, usb file transfer works on F14 and G2 probably 99.99% of the time.
3. checking the fiile system on the SD card? stuck it ointo my F14/G2 and transferred fine.Originally, I had stated tjat the usb is rendered useless until a reboot. this is not correct. after a few hours or so, the usb was able to be remounted.

Re: USB Crashes While Copying On Fedora 15/GNOME 3

Is this an external card reader on a multi-port-hub with power supply? I had once many problems with one of this kind, causing all sort of weird kernel messages. If so try to connect the card reader to the USB-port of your PC or is the a built-in card reader?

Re: USB Crashes While Copying On Fedora 15/GNOME 3

It is a little iConnect external card reader (no power supply) connected directly to the usb, no hub.

Also, don't know how to duplicate the problem. And the remounting after the crashes seemed to work only that one time.

Re: USB Crashes While Copying On Fedora 15/GNOME 3

I saw the same thing when backing up my photos the other day to an external HD (1TB) connected via usb. I may have even lost some files, though I haven't been able to confirm that yet. I kicked Gnome 3 to the curb and tried using Thunar and XFCE. Saw the same thing happen and definitely lost some files. So I kicked F15 to the curb as well.

Re: USB Crashes While Copying On Fedora 15/GNOME 3

Apparently, it maybe a GNOME 3 thing. I had tested using the command line "cp" and it works fine. I had copied, 30 times, the image folders from the SD card to the local drive without any errors. There were approximately 1084 files of 1mb transferred each time.
