Re: microphone in fedora 15

To Golf4Fun::
I've seen your alsa-info-sh output but unfortunately I can't provide you with any help.

To StephenH:
Yes, you'll have to compile and install it any time the kernel is updated. I do it myself to keep my mic working.

I wasn't looking for help - my microphone works. I posted the alsa-info to help after your earlier request for it.

Ah, that's why I couldn't find anything strange in your alsa-info!

Re: microphone in fedora 15

run "alsamixer -c0" in a terminal. Press F4 then lower to zero all capture channels' left inputs by pressing "z".
if you're using skype, don't let it adjust sound levels, there's a checkbox for that somewhere.

alsamixer -c0 shows:

Card: HD-Audio Generic F1: Help │
│ Chip: ATI R6xx HDMI F2: System information │
│ View: F3: Playback F4: Capture F5:[All] F6: Select sound card │
│ Item: S/PDIF Esc: Exit │

Below is a box containing "00", underneath of which is "<s/pdif>"

alsamixer -c1 shows:

Card: HDA ATI SB F1: Help │
│ Chip: Conexant ID 506c F2: System information │
│ View: F3:[Playback] F4: Capture F5: All F6: Select sound card │
│ Item: Master [dB gain: 0.00, 0.00] Esc: Exit │
│ with bars for <Master> and PCM.

F4 shows capture, mic and mic1.

Mic works great in Windows, but not in Fedora.

Re: microphone in fedora 15

I'm in the same boat as StephenH, I can't get headphone jack or mic (internal or jack) to produce anything. Attached is a screenshot of my alsamixer -c1 . Looks like there's Mic B, but I can't adjust it's volume. It's stuck @ zero no matter what.

I've tried lowering all capture channels, just left, just right. Nothing works for me. Interestingly, I have noticed that your volume gets tweaked by google if a sound-using window is open. Turn down your capture and watch google creep it back up automatically. Sweet I guess??

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: microphone in fedora 15

I solved my problem. Unfortunately, it involved adding an additional device--a USB adapter which acts as an external sound card. It is picked up by Pulse and is used properly, so I now have the input set to use the device and output set to use the internal speakers. I would rather have the internal microphone working, but decided having Skype available for use now was more important than taking the additional hours to fight the problem as it currently exists.

Hopefully, a permanent fix will come down the pipe.

This is what I got:

ebay item# =110523952108

Edit: I just posted this on the bugzilla page:

I noticed something of interest. After dumping Gnome Shell and most of Gnome
(with the exception of parts needed to keep some software running) in favor of
XFCE, I noticed in Alsa mixer, that I had different options for HDA ATI SB
(Alsa mixer), including switches for Mic B, Mic C, Mic E, and Mic F. Options
are for Mic Boost with a drop-down menu for 0, 10, 20, 30, or 40 dB. I played
around with the settings and with the microphone set for Mic F and 40dB boost,
I was able to get sound input through the built-in microphone in both Audacity
and Skype.

The XFCE mixer plugin for the panelhas the Sound Card listed as Playback:
Internal Audio Analog Stereo (PulseAudio), the Mixer track as Master, and the
Left-click command to bring up xfce4-mixer.

The USB adapter has just become moot. Figures I would find a solution AFTER purchasing it. Thankfully, it was cheap.
