    Gnome3 shell - strange colors

    Hello,

I have a dual head and I am using an ATi Radeon HD 5700 graphics card. (1 GB memory). One of my displays is on HDMI and the other is on DVI. Fedora 13 and 14 (gnome 2) worked flawlessly. KDE in fedora 15 also works flawlessly. When I installed gnome-shell, the following happens:

    1. By default, the 2nd display is not detected, unless I use my "customized" xorg.conf (attached below)
    2. Gnome3's fallback works smoothly
    3. When I switch to gnome-shell, the system is very slow, and the "bar" on top has strange colors, like in this picture:

    4. I am using the catalyst driver from ati.amd.com (11.6)

I dont know how to fix this, I have tried tweaking the xorg.conf many times. Also, the "radeon" driver from rpmfusion crashes xserver. For some reason, when I remove catalyst and install radeon, and MANUALLY CHANGE THIS in xorg.conf (Driver "radeon" ), it auto-changes back to Driver "fglrx" when I restart and xserver fails to load because module fglrx could nto be found. (duh, I removed it?)

    here is my xorg.conf:

    Code:
    Section "ServerLayout"
    	Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
    	Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
    EndSection

I get the same exact thing, ATI drivers as well. I have not found a solution yet. Using Catalyst 11.4 from RPM Fusion.

Multi-monitor in Gnome 3.0 (ie. Fedora 15) isn't great. In fact, it probably can't even be called good. Perhaps it's because it was designed to be used on modern computers (for example, a phone, which doesn't have that many monitors) or maybe none of the dev's had multiple monitors... whatever the case it is receiving tons of love for 3.2 and should be vastly improved. Until then...

I am using kde instead as I don experince the image issue on it with the ati drivers. One the machines I ran vmware and play xp games in so having more graphics power allows things to be more playable. I had to learn a new gui any way, but have new laptop with optimus tech on. So it uses the intel drivers and works fine.

Any updates on this? I also get the striped top bar with the AMD Catalyst 11.8 driver in Gnome3.

does it do the same if you use the opensource ATI driver?

Re: Gnome3 shell - strange colors

Not sure. Was there anyone yet succesful with the open source drivers?

I am a bit afraid since some weeks ago managed to mess it up till my screens weren't recognized at all and I had to re-install Fedora. Which costs a lot of effort since it is my main work environment.

It is partly messed up as well now though.

    I am using a HD5450 card.

Do you think I can just install these drivers or should I first uninstall the AMD Catalyst driver? What do you suggest when it fails, is there a way to undo the changes (a full backup of the disk I suppose).
