Eye of Gnome and Shotwell together?

Fedora seems to be a very good distro when it comes to smartly choosing the right software, but I found it odd that there are two different image managers. Wouldn't it be better to have only one and save some space on the disc (preferably Shotwell, since even though it's not yet capable of viewing every format you might throw at it, it otherwise blows Eye of Gnome away in features and polish)? Maybe use that space to make Liferea reader a default application and throw us RSS lovers a bone?

No, they really serve different purposes, imo. EOG is almost purely a viewer at its core. It's not a photo album/organizer like Shotwell. This is similar to having Preview.app and iPhoto on the Mac.

I really wouldn't want to load Shotwell just to perform simple actions like viewing or flipping a random photo on the hard drive. In fact, I've only ever used Shotwell for managing photos from a camera phone.

Really? Because I've used Shotwell as a viewer (actually, primarily as one), and found it perfectly suitable for that purpose. Everyone prefers different applications for their needs, of course, but from a KISS point of view, one application makes more sense. IIRC, Shotwell is the sole image manager/viewer in Ubuntu.

You talk of the act of starting up Shotwell as if it were some drawn out, burdensome task, when it's not and Shotwell is hardly more heavyweight than EOG.

Re: Eye of Gnome and Shotwell together?

I think it's normal to have one app for general viewing and another for organizing. I believe Windows does the same thing (or at least has in prior versions before MS stripped certain apps and made them download only in Win7).

I can't recall what Ubuntu has but they seem to continually be struggling for space on the Live CD, as well. However the size of the F15 LiveCD is under 600MB (Thanks to not having an office suite installed by default, I suppose).

Ubuntu has a space issue, that is true. Though we shouldn't compare ourselves to Windows and Mac when those systems are so notorious for software bloat.

Re: Eye of Gnome and Shotwell together?

I hate Sh*twell with a vengeance and if I have to use Gnome always remove it and install GThumb. As I said elsewhere, everyone has their own preference and the devs are stuck with what they perceive is the most popular. Personally, I'm glad Fedora removed Mono and F-Spot!

Now for that beer!

Re: Eye of Gnome and Shotwell together?

Well, I'm amazed anyone can actually hate Shotwell, especially given how far the pretty little thing has come in such a relatively short time. But anyway, I'm still going to forward this minimalist idea (and my other one) to the devs via Bugzilla.
