F14 or F15?
Hey All,
I am about to upgrade the OS on our server from Fedora 4 to either Fedora 14 or Fedora 15. I am pretty new to this so have a couple of questions:
1. Would F14 or F15 be better? The server will be connected to machines with all of the following platforms: F4, F14, Windows 3.1.1, Windows 7
2. Will F14 or F15 be supported for a longer period of time?
3. Do you know of any easy to to install server instructions I can reference if I get lost?
Thanks in advance for your input and assistance.
Cheers!
John

Re: F14 or F15?
I can't speak for the server side, but personally I've had way more problems with F15 than I did with F14 (none of them related to gnome) To the point where I'm seriously considering switching distros.

Re: F14 or F15?
14 is way more stable than 15 is right now, IMO i would wait to install 15 for awhile

Re: F14 or F15?
My experience so far is that my desktop server that uses routing rules on two networks is working great with fedora 15, but when i upgraded my home server i have all sorts of issues.
dhcpd didn't start automatically i a had to switch it over to the "systemctl enable dhcpd.service" command
logging stopped working fixed with "systemctl enable rsyslog.service"
my dual monitor setup in gnome 3 on my server does not have all the neat features that are on the single monitor display on the workstation. both use nvidia geforce agp cards. (the one in the server is a better card). I'm guessing this is due to the dual monitors.
I like having desktop icons so i had to yum install gnome-tweak-tool to get them back.
I've noticed that /etc/init.d/cyrus-imapd isn't there anymore, but i never changed that file so i don't think it is an issue.
and my biggest issue is that sendmail wont send email anymore.. still working on that one.
I'm defiantly not going to upgrade a corporate email server right now however.

Re: F14 or F15?
I don't want to suggest either option (both has its advantages and disadvantages), but I don't upgrade any production servers until the EOL of the given version or something else forces me to.
Personally, I don't experience problems with F15 (that couldn't be fixed easily), but again, worksforme arguments are invalid.

Fedora 4 ? wow.
1. Back up your data first.
2. I would use RHEL or Centos rather then Fedora

If I'm reading correctly then is it the same hardware? If so, then don't waste your time and instead install Scientific Linux 6 or wait till Wednesday for CentOS to release 6... we hope... I say that because any good support for old graphics cards went away between F12 & F13. If however you bought a nice new(er) nvidea card then fill your boots with F15. Knock on wood, it's been stable enough here.

Or Scientific Linux, I put it on my print server and it's really nice (and it's version 6 while Centos is still struggling to come out with 6)

Re: F14 or F15?
Don't do it! Fedora is not a server distro, and it's changed a great deal (i.e. got more experimental) since version 4. You seem to have survived for several years without security patches, but you really should get a distro with long-term support. If you're used to Fedora, then CentOS or Scientific Linux is what you need: stable software and security patches for 7+ years instead of 1.
