Question Intel SandyBridge Graphics issues

Hi,

I'm quite new to Linux, so please bare with me if my question(s) is stupid. I have recently got an Intel Core i3 2100 for a HTPC and I'm working my way through installing Fedora on it. I have installed F14 on it and it works ok but I find that the graphics are much slower than I expect. So I waited for F15 that is suppose to have support out of the box for the new Intel graphics but I find that the graphic performance has not improved.

So I don't know if I'm expecting too much from the embedded graphics, or I'm testing it wrong or I don't have the right drivers. To test this the graphics I run glxgears -geometry 800x600 (I know that it is not a full graphics test, but I can't find a proper benchmark and I figure it should be able to be running at 60FPS since it is that simple) and I barely get 7FPS.

I think I have the right driver installed since rpm -qa | grep intel returns xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.14.0-6.fc15.x86_64.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Intel SandyBridge Graphics issues

I don't have any problems per say but I find that the general responsivness of the graphics a bit slugish. This is quite apparent when using XBMC, where responses are very laggy even though CPU usage is always 0 percent. My issue is that i simply don't know if I'm running the right stuff and can't seem to find the correct info.

Re: Intel SandyBridge Graphics issues

Your 7 FPS is indeed very low. I have read an article from Phoronix a few days ago regarding Intel iGPU in Sandy Bridge on F15. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...=fedora_15_snb. The overall benchmark result is passable "out of the box" after upgraded the driver from testing repo (version 2.15.0).

You may be interested to read this article as well. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...snbsds_compare. Sooner or later, the updated version will even out run Windows.

Re: Intel SandyBridge Graphics issues

Thanks for the links weitjong.

I guess I'll try getting the Phoronix test suit and run it on my system and see how it goes. This will at least tell me if there is something wrong. I'll post back my results when I get them (it's going to take a couple of days since I unfortunately don't have much time to spare currently)

Re: Intel SandyBridge Graphics issues

Just a quick update. I got the phoronix test suite and properly benchmarked my system and everything seems to be ok. I got 26.7 fps average frame rate on Nexuiz (@800x600) which is better of what Phoronix have posted and 36 fps for Warsow (@1280x1024 my screen can't go up to 1600).

I don't understand seeing these results why glxgear is so slow, but I guess I don't have to worry. To bad that I have to stick with F15 though, I'm not sure I like Gnome 3. Oh well...

Thanks for your help.
