Removed second monitor

Earlier today I was using a second monitor plugged into my laptop's VGA port (Using the built in screen as the primary display).

I was running Firefox on that monitor. I now have that monitor removed and Firefox doesn't show up. I tried right clicking the icon in AWN and unmaximizing and maximizing again (I think this works on Windows) but it still doesn't show up. Is there a way to force the window back to the primary display?

Re: Removed second monitor

Your display settings (xorg.conf or w/e passes for it nowadays) could still be set for two monitors. Merely unplugging the device does not switch it back to single monitor; your system would behave as if it were still plugged in.

Going through the 'setup graphical display' procedure once more would force a reset. At least your system would see that there is only one display now. On some old laptops I'd even press the Fn combo that disables the extended display from the VGA port.

Re: Removed second monitor

Yeah it acted like there was still a monitor, if I moved the cursor off the right edge of the screen it disappear, after I rebooted it would not go off the screen. Rebooting fixed it, but it would be good if there was a way to do it without rebooting.

When I unplugged the monitor KDE asked me if I wanted to update my configuration to remove the monitor (similar to how it asked me to change the configuration to add it) but even though the settings said there was no monitor it still behaved as such.

Re: Removed second monitor

If you're like me, won't let go because the imperfections bother me, especially with all things video, the best place to go bughunting would be the Xorg.log. Stuff to look for would be resolution-related stuff, what your system decides how big a virtual space/desktop should be, given the memory limitations. This was how things went before all that HAL stuff came in, and playing detective using the logs soon became arcane. But at least doing this may lead you to ask the right questions, and the right people who know the HAL stuff can help you out. In the meantime, you'll learn what all this stuff is, what it does behind the scenes, and maybe even know what to look for when it's time to get better hardware. Or a better window manager.
